MORGAN HICKS

Artist's Statement

Theatre is about telling a story. It is about bringing people together to create shared experiences and memories. It’s about deep connections between human beings.  We work collaboratively, using every imaginable tool at our disposal to communicate directly with our audience.  We attempt to lessen the distance between human hearts by telling stories that meaningfully intersect with our community.  We explore  new narratives and find provacative ways to  illustrate the universal truths that are found in classics.

I believe that working in the theatre is an honor, and that the position of director must be earned.  At the start of each project, I am tasked with setting the tone and creating the expectations of how we will proceed.  â€‹ I work hard to create a feeling of stability, trust and compassion in both the rehearsal room and the theatre, so that the people involved can have a deep connection with each other; actor to actor, audience to audience, and actor to audience.

As a director, I am always thrilled by the opportunity to create a communal and ephemeral work of art that will exist in the consciousness between the creator and the observer.  The collaborative process becomes about more than building a production, it becomes a collective search for meaning, a commitment to revealing something that is essential and true about the human condition.

I am energized by my fellow artists as we delve deeply into a text in search of meaning.  I thrill at each new discovery and delight to share these moments with our audience.  I push each of my collaborators to dig deeper, be braver, be fearless in our search.  And in the end, we have earned our right to touch a human heart, to share a sacred moment of truth with a stranger, to speak and to hear and to connect.   We are more together than we are apart.
